ATTENTION: Upcoming Community Event, Important Information

Emmanuel Baptist Church will host a college readiness financial aid workshop on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 36 St. James Place, from 12noon-2pm in Room 201. The workshop is geared towards parents of and students that are high school junior and seniors preparing for college.

Collecting for Haiti

Following Brooklyn Tech's collection for displaced Haitians, we have some more info on who's collecting.


-Council Member Darlene Mealy, of the (nearby) 41st district in Central Brooklyn, will be collecting relief items of non-perishable food, clothing, blankets and other necessities, for the victims of the devastating earthquake. Any such items can be brought to her office at 1757 Union Street (near Utica Avenue), anytime during office hours Monday thru Saturday from (9am-6pm).


-The Brooklyn-based St. Paul Community Baptist Church (SPCBC) is the Brooklyn drop-off point for Yele Haiti. Items requested are blankets, solar flash lights, power bars/protein bars, clothes, and medical supplies. Financial donations are also accepted, and checks or money orders should be made out to St. Paul Community Baptist Church with "Yele Haiti" in the memo line (click the above link to donate online).

UPDATE: How To Assist Haitian People After Devastating Aftermath of Earthquake

Quick updates on how to assist after the Haitian earthquake.

Red Cross Family News Network

The International Committee of the Red Cross has established a family linking Web site enabling persons in Haiti and abroad to search for and register the names of relatives missing since the earthquake. To locate or register loved ones unaccounted for in Haiti, visit the Family News Network.

Crisis Counseling

The New York chapter of the Red Cross is providing crisis counseling at Brooklyn public schools, and will be on site at four Brooklyn public schools today to provide crisis counseling and support to Haitian students and school personnel affected.

A NYC-based organization, Counseling In Schools, are offering their services to schools throughout the City until the end of this week (tomorrow). After that, students may utilize the basic counseling services provided by their school’s administration.

Mayor's Fund to Advance NYC

The Mayor's Fund is accepting monetary donations for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. You can donate online, or by phone at 212-788-7794. Or mail checks, with Haiti Earthquake Relief written in the memo, to:

According to the NYT-Local, Brooklyn Tech High School has set up a donation box in the center section of the cafeteria during lunch periods where you can donate to help disaster.

American Jewish World Service has created the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund to send immediate emergency aid to communities affected by this disaster.
Caribbean Chabad, is presently providing support, and looking after the needs of emergency personnel entering into the nation of Haiti. If you know of relief personnel in need of kosher food and other support, please contact them. You can also donate directly.

ATTENTION: How To Assist Haitian People After Devastating Aftermath of Earthquake

By now, many are aware of the 7.0 earthquake that struck the nation of Haiti (Ayiti) yesterday. The earthquake brought with it enormous destruction to the already impoverished island, and the magnitude of the problem has been overwhelming to the Haitian government and relief agencies functioning in Haiti.


It is now time to show our support to the Haitian people, and to the community of Haitian-Americans that have settled in Central Brooklyn. I encourage you to donate to any of the organizations listed below. Included in this list are offices that you may contact to find out other ways you can support.

HAITI DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS

A VIGIL will be held at the Haitian Consulate today at 6:00 pm at 271 Madison Ave (between 39th & 40th St).

NYC Area - New York City residents may contact "311" for further information on Haiti Relief Efforts.

Secretary of State Clinton has set up an aid line that people can use to send money to support Haiti relief similar to what was set up to support refugees in Pakistan earlier this year. Cell phone users can text "haiti" to 90999 and $10 will go to relief efforts in Haiti. The $10 will show up on your phone bill.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE

· The U.S. State Department has set up a toll-free number to call for information about family members in Haiti: 1-888-407-4747.

Relief for Haiti

Today was the Stated meeting, and CM James wants to remind those in the 35th District that the Republic of Haiti has suffered a number of hurricanes which have been devastating to those that live in the Caribbean nation.

The New York City Council Encourages New Yorkers to Help with Hurricane Relief for Haiti

The following items are in high demand:

• Bottled water (packed in cases) - No single bottles
• Rice (dried in bags)
• Beans (dried in bags)
• Sterno canisters
• Tarpaulin for roofing or flooring (preferably 10’x10’)
• Nylon cord (100’ rolls)
• Hygiene items limited to toothbrushes, toothpaste, mild soaps
• New underclothes (children sizes)
• New hand towels

Drop off Locations will be open from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm until September 26th
