CM James, Elected Officials, Musician/Artist Common Gather for Ajile L. Turner Fdtn Donation to MS 113; March 2; 11AM

**For Immediate Release**

AJILE L. TURNER FUND DONATES KEYBOARD TO
Ronald Edmonds Learning Center - (MS 113), “Going from Good to Great”
Council Member Letitia James, along with Assemblymember Hakeem Jeffries, and Congressman Ed Towns will join Principal Khalek Kirkland and musical artist–rapper Common at 11 am on Tuesday, March 2 - at MS 113 located at 300 Adelphi Street for donation of electronic musical keyboard to Music Director Wayne Winston
(Brooklyn, NY) Ajile L. Turner was a young entrepreneur of thirty-eight years who died in a tragic motorcycle accident during the summer of 2009. Mr. Turner was a pillar of the Fort Greene community in Brooklyn. Ajile fostered a passion for the connection/assimilation and development of music & arts, and the youth of his community.
On Tuesday March 2, 2010, the Ronald Edmonds Learning Center (MS 113), will receive the donation of an electronic musical keyboard from the Ajile L. Turner Scholarship Fund (ALTSF), through the Common Ground Foundation. Sounds from this new keyboard will now add even more to the incredible motivation in place at MS 113, which is fostered by Principal Khalek Kirkland and Music Director Mr. Wayne Winston. The mission of the school is to inspire urban children through the arts, while also developing them as leaders of tomorrow.
The students at MS 113 are offered an accelerated curriculum of fine and performing arts, sciences, technology and foreign language. When the bell rings at MS 113 - Ronald Edmonds Learning Center, the motto that lingers in its halls is “Going from Good to Great!” This musical gift will be presented by Mattie Turner, the Mother of Ajile (Ah-Ja-Lay) L. Turner, Rashid Lynn, actor, and musical artist-rapper Common, who is Ajile’s cousin...to the school’s music department.
As a music and art non-profit the ALTSF understands the challenges that schools face in today's economy. Having worked in the NYC public school system, Ajile's life was largely surrounded by the music and entertainment industry. In the past, donations were given to the school through the Fort Greene Festival, which Ajile was also involved with.
At the untimely passing of Ajile L. Turner, his mother came to NYC from Cleveland, Ohio and felt the love and support of the community at large to keep his dream alive. Mattie Turner met with Congressman Ed Towns, Council Member Letitia James, Assemblymember Hakeem Jeffries and other community leaders, ad well as Fort Greene business owners at that time.
“As the founder of ALTSF and mother of Ajile, in recognizing his love and passion for music and education, it is only befitting that we maintain the relationship between youth, education and the arts,” said Mattie Turner. This partnership will be a continuous one, as the students of MS 113 and Common will perform at the Fort Greene Festival in late June.
Music is a universal language that connects people the world over no matter the genre. Ajile L. Turner lived his life helping artists to speak through their music, and businesses to spread that music throughout the world. His love of the arts, and selfless acts were the hallmarks of his brief life, and these gifts left a positive impact on many others.
Council Member James said: “The Ronald Edmonds Learning Center has excelled in every way, especially within the arts, and through the leadership of its principal and teachers, along with its disciplined students. The school is well-deserving of this gift.”
While the quantity of his life may have not been long, the quality was beyond measure. The vision of the Ajile L. Turner Fund is to celebrate the quality of Ajile's life by empowering young men and women with scholarships, mentoring, and support in their pursuit to make positive connections with others through the art of music, the business of music and selfless acts.

Alternate Side Parking Regulations Suspended In Parts Of Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights (South of Joralemon Street), Boerum Hill, Fort Greene, and Clinton Hill Starting September 8th For Six To Eight Weeks As DOT Posts New, Reduced Street-Cleaning Regulations.
New regulations will take effect in Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, Vinegar Hill, Fulton Ferry, and Brooklyn Heights (Joralemon Street and North) starting September 14th.
Suspension is the final of three phases for neighborhoods in Community District 2.
The suspension will last in Brooklyn's Community District 2 for approximately six to eight weeks as the Department of Transportation (DOT) installs some 2,000 signs with new, reduced regulations. This is the third and final phase of the project to change signs throughout the district. (You can read about the previous phases here and here)
The second phase of the sign-replacement project is now complete, with signs in Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, Vinegar Hill, Fulton Ferry and Brooklyn Heights north of Joralemon Street having been replaced since July 13th. The newly posted regulations will be enforceable on Monday, September 14, giving residents two weeks to adjust to the new rules.
In the upcoming phase of the sign-replacement project, some daytime residential street cleaning parking restrictions are being reduced from twice a week to just once a week to ease parking for local residents. In other cases, only the time of day of the street-cleaning regulation will change. The new rules were established by the Department of Sanitation at the request of Community Board 2.
Street Cleaning Regulations (all parking signs marked with a broom symbol) will be suspended within the following borders from September 8th until further notice:
North: Joralemon Street (not included) from Furman Street to Boerum Place;
Fulton Street (included) from Boerum Place to Classon Avenue.
East: Classon Avenue (included) from Fulton Street to Atlantic Avenue.
South: Atlantic Avenue (not included) from Furman Street to Court Street;
Court Street (not included) from Atlantic Avenue to Wyckoff Street;

4th Avenue (included) from Atlantic Avenue to Pacific Street;
Atlantic Avenue (included) from 4th Avenue to Classon Avenue.
West: Furman Street (included) from Atlantic Avenue to Joralemon Street.
As the attached map indicates, Street Cleaning Regulations will be in effect on Joralemon Street; on Atlantic Avenue west of Court Street; on Court Street from Atlantic Avenue to Wyckoff Street; and on 4th Avenue from St. Mark's Place to Pacific Street.
The changes do not affect 8AM to 6PM parking rules or meter regulations, or any other parking rules that are not street cleaning regulations. DOT will give advance notification before enforcement resumes, and the public is encouraged to check the DOT's Web site or call 311.

Honoring Legendary Jazz Musician Bill Lee

On the Stated held yesterday, Council Member Letitia James and the New York City Council honored legendary jazz musician William “Bill” James Edwards Lee III, with a proclamation for his life’s work.
William "Bill" James Edwards Lee III was born on July 23, 1928, and is an American musician. The jazz musician, composer, educator and acoustic bassist was born in Snow Hill, Alabama more than 80 years ago. He now lives Brooklyn's 35 District with his wife Susan.
This profound jazzman continued in the footsteps of his parents, Arnold and Alberta. Bill Lee’s father was the first bandmaster of Bethune-Cookman College, and his mother was a concert pianist, (also Bill Lee’s grandfather- his namesake- graduated from Tuskegee Institute and founded the school Snow Hill Normal and Industrial Institute.) Today, Bill Lee is the father of five boys and a girl, including director Spike Lee; he has composed original music for many of his son's films, such as She's Gotta Have It; School Daze; Do the Right Thing; and Mo' Better Blues. His children by his first wife Jackie (deceased) are: Spike; Chris; David; Joie; and Cinque; and his youngest son, with his second wife Susan is Arnold VI.
While residing in Brooklyn for the last 50 years, Bill Lee has had the opportunity to be in the presence of the greatest performers on the planet, and has written more than eleven folk–jazz operas. He has played the bass for many artists including Aretha Franklin, and Bob Dylan. Bill Lee has recorded with Billy Wallace; Frank Strozier; Bob Dylan; Chris Anderson; Johnny Griffin; Bruce Langhorne; Chad Mitchell; Eric Weissberg; Ray Bryant; and Judy Collin; to name a few, and he wrote for Max Roach; Richard Davis; Ted Dunbar; Booker Little; Muriel Winston; Clifford Jordan; Donald Harrison; and others. Bill Lee also appeared with Billie Holiday; Sarah Vaughn; Dinah Washington; Carmen Mc Rae; Betty Carter; Dizzy Gillespie; Clifford Brown; Art Blakey; Duke Ellington; Billy Strayhorn; and hundreds of more great musicians.
Bill Lee is the founder of the New York Bass, Violin Choir, and he continues to mentor up-and-coming musicians.
