In 2002, BMBC ran a major capital campaign to restore the badly damaged façade, roof, and pinnacles of our landmark church building. That campaign – which combined a $200,000 New York State Historic Preservation grant with $700,000 of individual donations – permitted the church to complete the renovation effort on time and on budget. It also, however, cut deeply into the community’s ability to support our social service programs. This year, BMBC undertakes the second stage of the renovation – replacing a damaged and out-dated electrical and heating/cooling system, repairing the ceiling of the sanctuary, and reinforcing several interior spaces so they can be better used by the after-school and drama programs.

CM James Fights for Business Opportunities, Small Businesses
Council Member James has used her position in the New York City Council to strengthen small businesses- from leading the NYCC's Contracts Committee to address the administrations Department of Education outsourcing book contracts to large out-of-state companies over local bookstores, to co-sponsoring local laws 2005/129 and 2008/067, and Resolution 1773-2009. This important legislation increased opportunities and benefits for minority-and-women-owned (MWBE) businesses, especially. Local law 129 specifically increased opportunities for certified MWBE's to bid on public contracts, increase their capacity, and effectively contribute to the City's economy. Additionally, Council Member James has always offered her personal support and encouragement to small businesses in the 35th District. She has consistently encouraged local businesses to hire youth and unemployed adults in the communities they serve, and early-on supported expansion of the Brooklyn Navy Yard to create more industrial business opportunities.
In her continuing effort to build upon small business opportunities, the Council Member James has drafted a resolution in support of U.S. Representative Yvette Clarke's Congressional bill H.R. 3771, a bill that was amended and re-introduced into Congress in October 2009. This bill was designed to aid MWBE small businesses in building their capacity in the industry of construction. The bill would amend the Small Business Act to charge the United States Small Business Administration with establishing and/or expanding mentorship programs, and identifying problems and creating solutions to meet construction needs/demands. The bill was recently amended to include veteran-owned small construction companies, as well as to establish grant programs to enhance access to specialized education and resources.
Council Member James looks forward to using her position in the New York City Council and as Chairperson of the Council's Contracts Committee to strengthen business opportunities, and helping small businesses stay afloat in these harsh economic times.

“Once again we come together to support a family in need, who suddenly has lost dear loved ones through tragic circumstances. Sadly, a mattress was ignited accidentally, and smoke quickly filled the Crown Heights apartment claiming three beautiful lives, said Council Member Letitia James. I believe that it is the responsibility of the community to hold up their neighbors in times such as these; therefore we will do whatever we can to help the Jean family as they grieve, try to make sense of what happened, and put their lives back together.”

Now, the NYC Department of Education allows parents to also have increased access through ARIS Parent Link (APL)- an online tool that provides parents with detailed information about their child.

Entrepreneur Ruth West Passes; She Leaves Behind Restaurant Legacy in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill
(Brooklyn, Nov. 18, 2009) Ruth Collock West was born in 1934 in Bayboro, North Carolina, and passed in Brooklyn, New York on November 12, 2009.
Having spent her youth in North Carolina, Ruth found her way to Brooklyn after finishing school, and worked her way up from a waitress, to a restaurateur. Ruth worked in the food business for over 50 years; the combination of being a lover of soul food and a people person propelled Ruth forward to opening her first business in 1967, and then three decades later in 1997, she opened the infamous Ruthie’s Soul Food, which is still thriving today.
“All of us on Myrtle Avenue are deeply saddened by Ms. Ruthie’s passing. Ms. Ruthie and her family have been neighborhood fixtures for many years, and we are very grateful for the commitment and investment they have made in helping us to revitalize Myrtle Avenue,” said Michael Blaise Backer, Executive Director, Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership.
Ruth West was an inspiration. An active member of Friendship Baptist Church in Bed-Stuy for nearly 40 years, she touched many lives within the community, as well as at the two locations of Ruthie’s Soul Food Restaurant in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill Brooklyn.
Deaconess Bertha Brown from Friendship Baptist Church related that Ruth Brown was the most loyal church member she knew. “Ruthie was loyal during her entire membership at Friendship Baptist Church; whenever anything needed to be done – she would roll up her sleeves. A trustee for many years, she would help out wherever and whenever needed,” she said.
Ruth’s six children, 22 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, other relatives along with numerous friends and customers will always remember her, and her delicious food with fondness. She shared her heart with all, and each evening at her restaurants closing, Ruth gave food to the homeless, who credit that meal as being their only one on many days.
“Ms. Ruthie was a jewel in the community; she spent her young adult years in Fort Greene and opened Ruthie’s during the mid-90s, which is now treasured within the community. She opened the first black and women owned restaurant in downtown Brooklyn, and was known for helping and feeding the poor and homeless over and over again. I am touched by a handwritten note posted at the Myrtle Avenue store that simply reads - thank you, from someone who is homeless,” said Council Member James.

Update: H1N1 Temporary Vaccination Clinics
The administration has implemented a comprehensive plan to address influenza (specifically H1N1) this flu season, including early vaccination for school-aged children, establishing influenza clinics, and drug store vaccinations.
To further the goal of preparing all City residents for the flu season, every weekend from November 14th through December 13th, the City’s Health Department will be offering free H1N1 vaccines at temporary clinics located in schools throughout the city. Although these clinics were originally designed for middle and high school students, vaccines will be now available for anyone in the following groups:
-Pregnant women.
-Anyone 4 to 24 years of age. (Note: Children younger than 4 are not eligible to be vaccinated
at these clinics.)
-Persons 25 to 64 years of age who have underlying health conditions that increases risk of severe illness or complications. Such conditions include asthma, diabetes, chronic heart and lung conditions, kidney failure, or a weakened immune system.
-Anyone who lives with or cares for children less than 6 months old.
The vaccination clinics will be open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are limits on the number of people that the clinics can accommodate, so there may be lines.

(Brooklyn, Nov. 11, 2009)- In an example of poor planning, two teens were injured by gunfire last night, possibly due to irresponsible management of the promotional event, as well as insufficient security at the Atlantic Center Mall. The incident occurred at the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant’s Tuesday, 40-cent, Wing Promotion. An altercation between restaurant patrons happened in the mall, which then spilled into the streets of Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
“Falling on the night prior to the Veterans Day school holiday, the restaurant could not accommodate, nor provide proper security for the crowd of teens that responded to the promotion – geared to middle and high school students. The NYPD was forced to maintain order, resulting in resources being withdrawn from local streets, a burden to Fort Greene and the 88th Precinct,” said Council Member Letitia James.
“I question the marketing and management of this event, and ask that restaurants and mall management seriously re-evaluate security procedures for highly attended promotions such as the one held yesterday evening. It is my hope, and those of the community that the two injured teens have a speedy recovery.”

The perpetrators have not been arrested, and we are putting forth a reward for those who provide information leading to the arrest of the individuals that committed this senseless crime.”

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR DAVID A. PATERSON ON EXTENSION OF FEDERAL UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE
President Obama signed a federal extension of Unemployment Insurance, ensuring that nearly 55,000 New Yorkers who had previously exhausted their benefits will be entitled to an additional 20 weeks.
Unemployment Insurance was created as a safety net for workers who found themselves out of work through no fault of their own. In an economic climate where there is only one job for every six unemployed New Yorkers, Unemployment Insurance has taken on a different meaning. It has quickly changed from a safety net to a lifeline.
As I travel the State and speak with unemployed New Yorkers, I am encouraged to hear that they do not want to collect unemployment benefits forever. They want to work, and there is nothing they want more than the financial independence a good job has to offer.
I encourage the unemployed in New York to visit one of our 81 One-Stop Centers across the State as often as possible. Let our experts help you find a job. From the Department of Labor’s On-the-Job Training program to new opportunities targeting the clean energy sector, there are dozens of government programs that unemployed New Yorkers may not be aware of and they should take advantage of them.
In addition, workers should also visit the Green Careers NY website at http://www.greencareersny.com/. The site is a green jobs portal, providing a way to search all New York based green jobs training programs and jobs at one website.
As I work with the Legislature to tackle the budget deficit in the coming days, my focus remains on ensuring the fiscal strength of the State – and that we have the resources to take care of the most vulnerable among us for months and years to come.

CM James, Tenants Speak Out About Conditions at Dermot Property

Tenants in Predatory Equity Buildings Speak out about poor conditions, harassment and the loss of affordable housing- immediately following forum on Poverty, Housing, Hunger and Homelessness
Brooklyn, NY- Council Member Letitia James and tenants from Brooklyn apartment buildings owned by the predatory equity company Dermot gathered outside of Trinity Church Parish Hall Thursday (October 29, 2009) evening to call attention to the rapid loss of affordable housing throughout NYC.
“Where are we supposed to go? Where is the housing for us? All I see in our neighborhood is new high rise, luxury condos being built. My building has lost nearly 1/3 of the rent stabilized apartments and more are being pressured to leave. Where can we live?” asked Linda Foster, a resident of 43 years at 266 Washington Avenue in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
Tenants spoke about their landlord in particular, Dermot, and the harassment they’ve experienced, lack of repairs, poor communication with management and pressure to vacate their rent stabilized apartments.
“The apartments where older tenants live are not being maintained well. The repairs are unprofessional and messy,” said Michael Melville a 17 year resident of 260 St. James Place.
Tenants also spoke to the larger political climate that has affected, and basically created these unfortunate situations.
“This is a human rights issue. It’s not just about tenants in our building, in buildings owned by Dermot - it’s about people losing their homes, where they’ve lived all their lives. It’s not just an apartment to us, it’s our home; it’s our community. Why are they taking away our home for their own greed,” said Kim Longsworth, a 36 year resident of 266 Washington Avenue. “We need a mayor who will take the needs of all New Yorkers into account.”
“A number of the tenants concerns could be resolved if the management would agree to meet with the tenants,” said Jon Furlong, a Community Organizer at Pratt Area Community Council. “But, Dermot even refused City Council Speaker Christine Quinn’s request for a meeting. They view people’s homes as a money making investment and have no regard for tenants’ rights. This is another sad example of corporate greed.”
Dermot purchased a number of rent stabilized buildings in Central Brooklyn over the past three years at prices way above the previous sale price. They have explicitly told tenants they want to make a profit on the building. “Since Dermot has taken over management of apartment buildings in my district, my office has learned about a series of transgressions on their part. Tenants have expressed that they feel Dermot plans to rid their buildings of rent stabilized apartments. Dermot has failed to communicate their intent to ensure that their tenants remain in place,” said Council Member James. “I am also holding Dermot responsible and accountable for completing all repairs in their buildings, and for providing quality housing, period,” she said.

Tenants in Predatory Equity Buildings Speak out about poor conditions, harassment and the loss of affordable housing- immediately following forum on Poverty, Housing, Hunger and Homelessness
Brooklyn, NY- Council Member Letitia James and tenants from Brooklyn apartment buildings owned by the predatory equity company Dermot gathered outside of Trinity Church Parish Hall Thursday (October 29, 2009) evening to call attention to the rapid loss of affordable housing throughout NYC.
“Where are we supposed to go? Where is the housing for us? All I see in our neighborhood is new high rise, luxury condos being built. My building has lost nearly 1/3 of the rent stabilized apartments and more are being pressured to leave. Where can we live?” asked Linda Foster, a resident of 43 years at 266 Washington Avenue in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
Tenants spoke about their landlord in particular, Dermot, and the harassment they’ve experienced, lack of repairs, poor communication with management and pressure to vacate their rent stabilized apartments.
“The apartments where older tenants live are not being maintained well. The repairs are unprofessional and messy,” said Michael Melville a 17 year resident of 260 St. James Place.
Tenants also spoke to the larger political climate that has affected, and basically created these unfortunate situations.
“This is a human rights issue. It’s not just about tenants in our building, in buildings owned by Dermot - it’s about people losing their homes, where they’ve lived all their lives. It’s not just an apartment to us, it’s our home; it’s our community. Why are they taking away our home for their own greed,” said Kim Longsworth, a 36 year resident of 266 Washington Avenue. “We need a mayor who will take the needs of all New Yorkers into account.”
“A number of the tenants concerns could be resolved if the management would agree to meet with the tenants,” said Jon Furlong, a Community Organizer at Pratt Area Community Council. “But, Dermot even refused City Council Speaker Christine Quinn’s request for a meeting. They view people’s homes as a money making investment and have no regard for tenants’ rights. This is another sad example of corporate greed.”
Dermot purchased a number of rent stabilized buildings in Central Brooklyn over the past three years at prices way above the previous sale price. They have explicitly told tenants they want to make a profit on the building.
