Position Vacancy Education Director/Special Needs Coordinator for Head Start

Bank Street Head Start is immediately seeking an Education Director/Special Needs coordinator for its program located at 113 East 13 Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The candidate must hold a Masters Degree in Education (Early Childhood preferred) and New York State Certification in Education (Early Childhood or K thru sixth grade). Candidates with a degree, certification or experience working with children with special needs are preferred.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the supervision of a teaching staff of 10 teachers, coordinating referrals and monitoring services provided for children with special needs, coordination of volunteers and interns, observing and evaluating staff, providing training for staff and parents, meeting with parents, assuring that a developmentally appropriate curriculum is provided for all children and completing reports required by funders.

Qualifications

ATTENTION: Seven Roses Fdtn Scholarship Available!

The Seven Roses Legacy Foundation Scholarship is now available. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that serves as the charitable arm of the Eta Nu Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. The mission of the organization is to serve the Brooklyn and Queens communities in New York City by empowering youth to expand their cultural and social horizons, improve their financial literacy, and pursue higher education opportunities. The foundation primarily serves students who live in economically-challenged neighborhoods within Brooklyn and Queens.

Each yeah, the foundation awards three book scholarships in the amount of $500, $750, $1,000 to graduating high school seniors throughout Brooklyn and Queens who attend public and private schools, and who will enroll in a community college, four-year college/university, or trade school. The book scholarships are primarily based on writing an essay (although there is an accompanying application). Please see this link for more information (the application can be found here). BACKGROUND on the FAB BID
The Fulton Area Business Alliance (FAB) is a newly formed Business Improvement District working on behalf of property owners, merchants, residents and stakeholders along Fulton Street in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill - from Rockwell Place to Classon Avenue (plus adjacent blocks of Lafayette, Greene and Putnam Avenues). Their goals are to retain current businesses and improve the atmosphere to make the area of Fulton Street a clean, safe and retail diverse environment that is a destination for people work, shop, dine and play.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Liaison for Public Safety and the Environment
In short, the principal responsibility of the Liaison is to execute strategies that create and maintain safe and sanitary conditions within the FAB Alliance district. The Liaison will supervise the core sanitation, public safety, public space maintenance programs within the District; develop strategies for upgrading the quality of life in the district and works with the Bid Manager, FAB Board of Directors, City agencies, and stakeholders to address and resolve issues that threaten the public health, safety, and/or general welfare; report to the Bid Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Monitors safety, sanitation and quality-of-life conditions within the FAB area on a daily basis
· Liaise with city agencies and NYPD to advocate for services on behalf of business and property owners
· Manages collection of safety, sanitation and quality-of-life data including, but not limited to, conducting surveys and cataloging concerns and/or complaints
· Tracks actions taken to resolve issues and reports results
· Liaise with the NYPD, District Attorney and other enforcement agencies regarding crime and safety issues
· Create procedure for merchants and property owners to report incidents and share
information regarding security and quality-of-life issues. This would be executed online
· Develop a weekly report that quantifies all security incidents and sanitation and quality-of-life issues
· Works with Bid Manager to identify efforts and resources needed to address conditions that threaten health, safety, and general welfare within the District
· Assists the Bid Manager and Deputy Director in developing and maintaining strategic
relationships with City agencies (including but not limited to the Department of Sanitation, Department of Transportation, and Department of Buildings, Department of Parks, Community Board 2 and 88th Precinct Community Council)
· Meets with sanitation vendor on a regular basis to evaluate sanitation needs in the
District
· Assists the Bid Manager in developing and supervising the annual budget for landscaping, sanitation, graffiti-removal and safety programs
· Supervises all processes for acquiring permits including but not limited to special events, banners, holiday lighting
· Other duties as required

Qualifications and Skills:
· Professional and friendly with excellent verbal and written communications skills
· Proven track record dealing with community groups, city agencies, businesses, and
residents
· Capacity to react quickly to issues as they arise
· Outstanding problem-solving and creative thinking abilities
· Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse array of contacts and stakeholders
· Background in sanitation or public safety required, preferably within New York City
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or Google Docs

The following skills or characteristics are not required but are highly desirable:
· Knowledgeable in the role Business Improvement Districts play in assisting local
businesses and property owners
· Proficiency in database creation and management
· Knowledge of the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill area

(Brooklyn, NY) Ajile L. Turner was a young entrepreneur of thirty-eight years who died in a tragic motorcycle accident during the summer of 2009. Mr. Turner was a pillar of the Fort Greene community in Brooklyn. Ajile fostered a passion for the connection/assimilation and development of music & arts, and the youth of his community.

On Tuesday March 2, 2010, the Ronald Edmonds Learning Center (MS 113), will receive the donation of an electronic musical keyboard from the Ajile L. Turner Scholarship Fund (ALTSF), through the Common Ground Foundation. Sounds from this new keyboard will now add even more to the incredible motivation in place at MS 113, which is fostered by Principal Khalek Kirkland and Music Director Mr. Wayne Winston. The mission of the school is to inspire urban children through the arts, while also developing them as leaders of tomorrow.

The students at MS 113 are offered an accelerated curriculum of fine and performing arts, sciences, technology and foreign language. When the bell rings at MS 113 - Ronald Edmonds Learning Center, the motto that lingers in its halls is “Going from Good to Great!” This musical gift will be presented by Mattie Turner, the Mother of Ajile (Ah-Ja-Lay) L. Turner, Rashid Lynn, actor, and musical artist-rapper Common, who is Ajile’s cousin...to the school’s music department.

As a music and art non-profit the ALTSF understands the challenges that schools face in today's economy. Having worked in the NYC public school system, Ajile's life was largely surrounded by the music and entertainment industry. In the past, donations were given to the school through the Fort Greene Festival, which Ajile was also involved with.

At the untimely passing of Ajile L. Turner, his mother came to NYC from Cleveland, Ohio and felt the love and support of the community at large to keep his dream alive. Mattie Turner met with Congressman Ed Towns, Council Member Letitia James, Assemblymember Hakeem Jeffries and other community leaders, ad well as Fort Greene business owners at that time.

“As the founder of ALTSF and mother of Ajile, in recognizing his love and passion for music and education, it is only befitting that we maintain the relationship between youth, education and the arts,” said Mattie Turner. This partnership will be a continuous one, as the students of MS 113 and Common will perform at the Fort Greene Festival in late June.

Music is a universal language that connects people the world over no matter the genre. Ajile L. Turner lived his life helping artists to speak through their music, and businesses to spread that music throughout the world. His love of the arts, and selfless acts were the hallmarks of his brief life, and these gifts left a positive impact on many others.

Council Member James said: “The Ronald Edmonds Learning Center has excelled in every way, especially within the arts, and through the leadership of its principal and teachers, along with its disciplined students. The school is well-deserving of this gift.”

While the quantity of his life may have not been long, the quality was beyond measure. The vision of the Ajile L. Turner Fund is to celebrate the quality of Ajile's life by empowering young men and women with scholarships, mentoring, and support in their pursuit to make positive connections with others through the art of music, the business of music and selfless acts.
